3 Unusual Places to Find Used Cars
When you are looking for used cars, you probably automatically think of a used car dealership. But these are not the entities that sell used cars: there are other places you can check out if you are feeling a little more adventurous, locations that might not immediately come to mind.
You can, for example, go to a car auction. Car rental companies also sell vehicles that have been used as rentals. And, believe it or not, if you are a Costco member, this giant retailer also sells cars.
But even if you do check out one of these places, you should also go to car dealerships because they are difficult to match for the number of cars they have and the variety of makes and models.
- Car Auctions
There are two types of car auctions, the government auction and the public auction.
An example of a government auction might be one held by a county to get rid of a fleet of police cars. The upside of government auctions is that you know what you are getting – there are records of how the vehicles have been maintained. The downside is that these auctions can get very competitive.
You also have to know what you are doing at a public auction. Many of the cars are simply not in very good shape and may need a good deal of work. You can find good deals here, but you really have to look.
- Car Rental Vehicles
The plus side on these cars is that they have most likely been well maintained, often better than a private owner would. You might also get a lower price on the car as a former rental.
The minus, as you might guess, is the people who rent these vehicles. You get people with all different kinds of driving habits, which can be hard on a car. Also, since the person doesn’t own the car, he is less likely to treat it as kindly as he would his own. So, these cars can experience more wear and tear than a privately owned vehicle.
- Costco Cars
First the downside, but not a major one – you have to be a member of the warehouse club to participate in this used car program. What you do here is choose a certified, pre-owned car and then contact a dealership that has an agreement with Costco. Then, a person from the dealership gets in touch with you to schedule an appointment. He will show you a price sheet that shows the savings you will get on the car as a member of Costco.
