What Your Used Car Dealer Wants You to Know

When it comes to buying a used car, you should come prepared: know your budget, know what type of car you’re looking for, have some models years and mileage in mind, and know the Kelly Blue Book value of the cars you’re considering.

But your used car dealer also knows a few things that you don’t, things the dealer wants you to know.

Read below for four things your used car dealer wishes you knew.

  1. A used car is by far a much better value than a new car. As we mentioned in another post, a new car will lose almost 20 percent (19 percent) of its value, on average, as soon as you drive it off the lot. What’s more, it will lose more than 30 percent of its value in just three years. Don’t take that hit: buy a three- or five-year old car, with low mileage, and let its first owner take the financial hit!
  2. It’s OK to use your own mechanic for a pre-sale inspection of the car you’re seriously thinking of purchasing. Many used deal car dealers, including PAACO, offer a warranty on their used cars. But this doesn’t mean you should just believe what the dealer tells you. Instead, you should have your own mechanic inspect the car before you truly decide to purchase it.

  1. You may pay more for a used car from us than from a private seller, but we offer you more protection. For one thing, we’re required to operate under some pretty stringent procedures, and we also must abide by state and federal “lemon laws.” We also can help you with DMV registration and titling procedures. And, if a problem develops with the car soon after purchase, you can simply come back to the dealership. (Not that private sellers always disappear after a car sale. But we’re just saying…..)
  2. Be prepared to walk away. That’s right; we don’t want your sale if we can’t make a deal with which you’re happy. Why would we want you to leave? Because we know from experience that if you become unhappy with the car (for whatever reason), if you’re unhappy with the price you paid, or the financing we provided (for whatever reason), you’re going to talk about your poor experience and unhappiness about us with your friend s and family. And you’re going to do so a lot because car buyers tend to be passionate people when they feel they’ve been wronged. We’d rather you’d leave the deal on the table if you can’t leave happy
