5 Tips to Make You a Better Negotiator

When you go looking for a used car, you naturally want to get the best deal possible. But you are not quite sure how to do it. To help you out, here are five simple negotiating strategies you can use before you get the car dealership and when you are there.

  1. Research

Do some checking before you go to the car dealership. Figure out what kind of car you want, what kind of features you want, what type of mileage, and what age range. Then you can look online to see what the price range is for those types of cars.

Before actually purchasing any car, you should also get a report of the car’s history to find out how many owners there have been and whether the car has been in an accident.

  1. Don’t reveal too much.

The salesperson will want to know as much about you as possible so he knows what kind of approach to use in trying to sell you a car. So don’t tell him too much. For example, if you need to buy a car right away, it is best not to divulge the information. The salesperson doesn’t need to know when you plan on buying the car. If he knows it is urgent, it gives him more leverage as far as negotiating.

  1. Know what drives the salesperson.

This isn’t difficult to figure out, but you need to keep it in mind when looking at cars. Plain and simple, the salesperson wants to sell you a car at the highest price he can. He wants you to leave the dealership driving a car with as many upgrades as possible. So, you need to know what you want and stay focused on that.

  1. Take your time.

Don’t rush into making any decisions. That is what the salesperson wants you to do. He may bombard you with information that requires an answer, but you can take your time. Take the time to think it over. You don’t have to respond right away. Even if you know you don’t want what he is selling, an upgrade for example, you should still take time before answering. If you answer right away, he will simply move on to trying to sell you something else.

  1. Stay calm.

The last thing you want to do is let the salesperson see how excited you are about a particular car. Even if you love the vehicle, don’t show it. You may have found a car that fits all your requirements exactly, but treat it like any other vehicle. Ask for more information about it. Go look at other cars. But don’t give away that it is your dream car.
