Arriving to a dealership without having done any prior research is a great way to feel easily overwhelmed – there are tons of car types are out there, so it’s important to do some preliminary online research beforehand.
Don’t buy the first car you see. You should always do some looking around before you settle on a vehicle. It can be tempting to simply purchase the first car you love (or the first car you see), but this is almost always a mistake. Never, ever buy on impulse – a car is too precious of a commodity to do so! Be willing to walk away, and know not to buy the first car that catches your eye.
Know your budget. You should always know your spending limit before you set out to buy a used vehicle. That way, you know your threshold before you begin negotiating with a salesperson. Which brings us to our next point…
Negotiation is key. You should definitely come to the dealership armed with negotiation skills! And, if you really feel there’s a reason you should be getting a better deal on a car, make this clear. For instance, if you’ll be purchasing another car in the future with the dealership, use that bit of info to your advantage when negotiating.
Know when and where the deals are. Now’s the time to locate the best deals possible – because they’re definitely out there! Did you know? Every dealership offers special deals, depending on the season. For instance, if you can wait until the end of the year to purchase your new vehicle, this is a fantastic time to get a great deal, because most dealers will be itching to get their older models off the floor.
Take a test drive. Buying a car without taking it for a test drive first is always a bad idea – and yet, this happens! Take each car that you’re deciding between on a test drive not just around the block, but on the highway as well. Sometimes, cars will drive just fine on the street, but this may not be the case on the highway. Remember that you should always, always feel 100% comfortable with the car that you’re purchasing.
Avoiding the Lemon
If you want to avoid getting a lemon, following the above tips will help tremendously. It can also be helpful to understand the ins and outs of the lemon law in your state, so that you know how to prevent getting a lemon.
Okay, so what are lemon laws? Lemon laws are state-by-state laws that offer a solution for consumers who purchase defective vehicles and related products.
And, what are the requirements for a car to qualify as a lemon? This can vary per state, but generally, to qualify as a lemon, your car must meet the following criteria:
Basically, the car in question must have a substantial defect (i.e., a problem covered by your warranty that completely impairs the car’s use) that prevents the vehicle from running properly. This defect must be covered by the warranty that occurred within a certain amount of time. The car must not be able to be fixed, even after a number of attempts to repair it. Remember, do your own independent research into what qualifies a car as a lemon, as this does vary by state.
