Should Spouses Shop for Cars Together?
Often, they do. And often, they work together and compromise and are able to find a vehicle that suits both of them. So, in general, the answer is yes to that question for a variety of reasons. But there are some things you should keep in mind.
You think it will be like this car shopping together. But will it?
Compromise is the important term here. Shopping for a car together can also be an unhappy experience because your spouse is unwilling to budge on what he or she wants. When that happens, it can turn into a long day.
Also, women often complain that men take car buying as their particular domain, and feel that they have to have the last word on everything.
So it’s important before you both go out looking at automobiles that you do your research together. Identify the cars you like, the colors you like, etc., and make sure you come up with choices that are acceptable to you and your spouse. If you know beforehand what things are in the acceptable and unacceptable range for your partner, you can avoid a lot of headaches while shopping, and you won’t be bickering about what you want to buy.
If you shop together, then you can settle on a car acceptable to both, one you both will be happy with, and there won’t be any surprises.
Another reason to go with a partner is to help you maintain your poise under pressure. Buying a car is a stressful experience. The salesman is trying to get you to buy the car. A lot of information is running through your mind all at once – the financial terms of the sale, the condition of the car, the appearance of the car, among other things. It is at a time like this when we are more vulnerable and liable to make a decision too quickly, one we may regret later.
Having someone along with you can help with this decision making proccess. You have someone to talk things over with, someone who may see things you might have missed, or who might have questions you didn’t think of. There is less of a chance of making a hasty decision. Having two people there to tag-team the salesperson also will help to insure that he or she is completely forthright.
Each person can help to support the other. And together, knowing that two heads are better than one, you can make a more informed decision than one person could alone.
