Should You Buy a Car as a Christmas Gift?

The commercials are delightful this time of year: a man takes his lovely lady outside a home on what is presumably the morning of Christmas Day with his hands around her eyes. He then takes his hands away and she gasps in delight as the camera moves to a big, red-beribboned car in the driveway!

But do people really buy cars as Christmas gifts? More importantly, is it a good idea?

To answer the first question: sort of. Edmunds.com reported in late 2014 that luxury brands often increase sales in December (most commercials showing cars-as-Christmas-gifts showcase higher-end automobiles).

But car sales in general don’t necessarily increase in December, so it’s probably safe to say that car-giving for the holiday hasn’t exactly become a “thing.”

So, to answer the next question: Should you buy a car as a Christmas gift? Take a look below.

  • Because new and even used cars are not inexpensive, it’s probably best to give a car as a holiday gift only if you were going to anyway.
  • If you decide to get a car for someone, let other family members know: they can then give the recipient gifts that go with the car, such as floor mats, seat covers, satellite radio, etc.
  • The longer you can wait to purchase the car, the better, as dealerships almost always offer end-of-year sales on current-year models. Since many want to get rid of as many current-year model cars as possible, they may be more eager to sell at larger discounts later in December than earlier. What’s more, if you can wait until after Christmas to present the car to your loved one, you more than likely can save even more.
  • However, if you wait too long, you may not be able to get the exact model with the accessories you want and in the color you want as some colors/accessories may have to be shipped to the dealership.

Of course, here at PAACO, we hope you’ll present your loved one with a used car. Not only will you save more than if you were to buy a new car simply because buying used is less expensive than buying new, The New York Times in 2011 reported that, unlike buying a new car, you actually will get a better deal if you shop for the used car before December 25.
