Signs Your Vehicle May Need a New Battery

There are various signs that your car battery may need replacing. One of the first signs to look for is the engine is turning over, but the car will not start. More than likely, it is the battery. In this case, take the car to a mechanic to see if the battery needs replacing.

The age of the battery is another sign to look for. If a battery is older than three years, it may be time to replace it. Generally, batteries last for about two years before a new one is needed. An old battery can cause damage to a vehicle, so it is best to replace an older battery before signs of trouble occur.

Lift the hood of the car and check the battery to see if there is any corrosion or stains. If so, there may be a leak from the battery or from another part of the vehicle. Examine the terminals to see if there is any buildup. Leaks from the battery can damage the terminals and posts and keep the battery from functioning properly. Cleaning them will help keep the connections in place.

Another sign of a bad battery is a swollen or bloated battery case. Typically, excessive heat can cause the battery case to swell, which will decrease battery life.

If the headlights, interior lights or radio do not come on and if it will not start or crank, it is probably the battery. The battery gives power to all accessories in the car. If there are not any signs of life, the battery is most likely extremely weak or dead. To determine the exact cause, take the vehicle in for servicing.

If the engine is slow to start, it could also be a sign of possible battery trouble. If the engine is sluggish when there is an attempt to start the car and if it takes longer to start than it normally does, the battery may need to be replaced.

Check the battery fluid level. To do so, look at the battery case to see if the fluid level is below energy conductor or lead plates. If so, have the battery looked at by a professional.

When battery trouble is suspected, take a look at is the engine light. If the engine light and battery light indicators appear in the dashboard, it could mean that the battery is weak and that it needs replacing.

These are common signs of battery trouble and could be an indication that a new battery is needed.
