The World’s Fastest Automobiles
Speed. It’s at the core of every pre-pubescent boy’s poster car fantasies. It’s what fuels the insane notion of sitting stationary in the grandstands for hours, waiting for a 700 horsepower symphony of engineering to barrel past us at 200 miles per hour. It’s what gets our blood pumping, our brows sweating, and our hearts racing. Speed is at the core of the love of cars. And if you have the considerable resources required, some of that mind altering speed can be yours. So, to fuel that octane-powered fire in the eyes of every car guy, here is a list of the fastest automobiles in the world.
1. World’s Fastest Production Supercar: Hennesy Venom GT
Up until very recently, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport was the zenith of go-fast when it came to production vehicles. No longer. Made of sweat and oil (and a great deal of carbon fiber), the 1,244 horsepower Hennesy Venom GT claimed the title of world’s fastest production car just this year. While the Veyron still holds claim to the official Guinness record at 267.18 MPH, the Venom GT ran a GPS Verified top speed of 270.49 MPH. Not bad for a measly $1.2 million. Compare that to the Veyron Super Sport’s $2.4 million price tag, and it’s a veritable bargain.
2. World’s Fastest Pickup Truck
Pickups are usually associated with hauling things, good old boys, country western and American spirit. Speed doesn’t usually make that list. Allow the Shelby SVT Raptor to wipe away your preconceived notions. When Shelby got their hands on the already potent Ford F-150 SVT Raptor, they only had one thing on their minds: “you know, this truck is great and all, but it’s just not quite powerful enough.” So they jammed a 2.9 liter supercharger and a brand new exhaust system on the 411 horsepower V8 powering the thing. That brought the grunt up to 575 horses, made for a 0-60 time of six seconds, and took the top speed up to 160 miles per hour. That’s enough to make drivers on the autobahn nervous.
3. World’s Fastest F1 Car
F1 cars are known for their obscene power, massive lateral Gs, and breakneck speed. Every F1 car is a force to be reckoned with that will chew up and spit out the unworthy. But there was one car in particular that had to go the extra mile(s per hour). Enter the BAR-Honda 067 Lakester. Someone on the BAR-Honda team got it into their gasoline-addled mind to modify an F1 car for top speed runs on the Bonneville salt flats. So they did. The thing hit a top speed of 413 KPH – that’s 256.6 miles per hour, for those of you not metrically inclined.
4. The Fastest Car. Ever.
We couldn’t end this countdown without including it. Way back in 1997, the rocket car with a particularly virile name set a land speed record that remains unbroken. The Thrust SSC, powered by twin Rolls Royce Spey jet engines, set a record top speed of 771 miles per hour. That’s faster than the speed of sound.
